New Building: Generation House on the Hochrhein (Upper Rhine River, Germany)

Building specification

Living in- and with nature was an important part of the planning concept.

In the beginning, the house allows space for a young family of four or five. Later on, it is possible to accommodate grandparents or grown-up children in two separate apartments. To use already installed water connections and other technical supplies for bathroom and kitchen, minor rebuilding is always practicable. It becomes a house for generations.

Big apertures orientating towards the south-west makes the garden area a part of the house and add a lot of solar warmth to the heating during winter. By selecting the appropriate wall- and roof construction, one could reach a heat requirement of 9000 kWh/a.. Using a wood oven in the living space combined with an open layout of the building, it is possible to spread out heat in the whole house.

The use of ecological building material was an important aspect, when constructing the building. For example, all the floors are made of oil impregnated massive parquet. The garage's flat roof got an extensive roof greening, while the court was reduced to the minimum, to reduce surface sealing.

Feng Shui guidelines were determinant concerning the garden design, making it a valuable sequel to the interior – a place for quietness and relaxation.
